Mayfair has no shortage of small, expensive rooms. **Rumour** is the newest of them — the Dover Street space formerly known as Tabu, rebuilt by the same owners into something deliberately darker and more intimate. This review covers what the room is actually like and where it falls short.

## The Room

Deep red throughout: velvet banquettes, dark panelling, a chandelier and lighting kept low enough that the whole space reads as one private party. At around 200 capacity it is genuinely small — noticeably smaller than Tape or Maddox, closer in scale to Maison Close or Selene.

That smallness is the product. The booths face the floor, so there is no sense of being parked at the edge of the room. It also means Rumour feels full early, which flatters a Wednesday and makes a Saturday feel like an event.

## The Music

Open format — hip hop, RnB and house, read to the room. In a venue this size that is not marketing language: the DJ can see the whole floor and actually respond to it. The flip side is that there is no fixed genre night to aim for, so what you get depends on who is in that evening.

## The Crowd and the Door

Dressed-up Mayfair. Heels, smart menswear, no trainers. The door is selective and the ladies-only guestlist shapes who ends up in the room — a deliberate policy rather than an accident, and one worth understanding before you plan a night here.

## Value

A booth is **from £1,000 minimum spend**, which sits mid-range for Mayfair — above Reign and Tape’s entry tier, below The Box. What you get for it is a larger share of a smaller room, which is the honest trade: you are not buying scale, you are buying proximity and a guaranteed position.

For a group of eight to twelve who want to sit together all night, that is good value. For a big group who want a dance floor, a larger venue gives you more for the money.

## What Could Be Better

Three honest caveats. First, **the door policy is restrictive** — men cannot get on a list at all, so a group of friends either books a table or does not come, and that will not suit everyone. Second, **200 capacity means it gets tight**; if you like space to move, this is not the room. Third, it is **new** — the Tabu space has a track record but Rumour as a concept does not yet, so the crowd and programming are still settling.

## The Verdict

Rumour is a well-executed small Mayfair room that knows exactly what it is. Come for an intimate, dressed-up night with a group you want to actually talk to, book a booth, and it delivers. Come looking for a big night on a dance floor and you have picked the wrong venue.
