Museum lates in London are one of the best ways to start a night out without starting it in a bar. A museum late is an evening opening, usually with a bar, music, talks or a DJ in the galleries, that ends around the time most people are only just thinking about where to go next. This guide explains how London museum lates work, how to plan the hours between the last gallery and the first dance, and which clubs we book that fit naturally after each part of town, all as of November 2026.

## What a museum late actually is

A museum late takes a building most people know from school trips and daytime weekends and turns it into an adult evening. The galleries stay open past normal closing time, a bar appears in a hall or atrium, and the programme adds something you would not get at 2pm: a DJ under a whale skeleton, a silent disco, live music, a panel talk, a late screening or a hands-on workshop.

Time Out's long-running [guide to late-night museum and gallery openings](https://www.timeout.com/london/museums/late-night-opening-hours-at-london-museums-and-galleries) describes the formats that made the idea popular in London: adults-only Lates at the Science Museum, Friday Lates at the V&A and Tate Lates at Tate Modern, alongside simpler late opening hours at the British Museum, the National Gallery and others. Dates, prices and formats change from season to season, so treat any schedule you read as a guide and check the museum's own listings before you plan around it.

There are broadly three kinds of late, and they set up a night differently:

- **Programmed lates.** A themed evening with DJs, bars, talks and activities. These feel like a party already and suit groups who want energy from the start.
- **Late opening hours.** The galleries are simply open later, often on a Friday. Quieter, cheaper, and better for a date or a small group who want to talk.
- **Ticketed adult events.** Silent discos, sleepovers, special exhibition evenings. These sell out and are worth booking as soon as they are announced.

## The new one: London Museum at Smithfield

The big museum story of the season is the London Museum, the former Museum of London, which closed its old home in 2022 and opens its new site in the old Smithfield market buildings on Saturday 28 November 2026. Time Out named it the [best new thing to do in London in 2026](https://timeout.com/london/things-to-do/best-london-things-to-do-2026), pointing to the underground galleries in the old railway depot and a window that lets visitors watch trains running through Farringdon.

The museum says general admission is free with a booked ticket, that the new site is at Smithfield, London EC1A 9AG, and that its programme is meant to run "from day into night" with events, food and drink. Late opening details had not been fully published when we wrote this, so check the museum's own what's on listings for its evening hours before you build a Friday or Saturday around it. The opening weeks will be busy: book the free ticket early and expect queues.

For a night out, Smithfield sits next to Farringdon station, which is on the Elizabeth line. That matters, because it puts the West End and Bond Street a few minutes away once the galleries close.

## How to plan the hours between the museum and the club

Most lates wind down around 9:30pm to 10pm, and the clubs we book open at 11pm. That gap is where a museum night is won or lost. The good news is that it is almost exactly the right length.

- **6:30pm to 7pm: arrive.** Earlier is better at programmed lates. The popular talks, workshops and silent discos often run on a first come basis, and the bar queue only grows.
- **7pm to 9:30pm: the late itself.** Pick one or two things you actually want to see rather than trying to cover the whole building. Museum bars are fine for a drink but rarely for a meal.
- **9:30pm to 11pm: dinner or a proper bar.** This is the bridge. A sit-down dinner near your club does two jobs: it feeds everyone before a long night and it moves the group across town at an easy pace.
- **11pm onwards: the club.** Arriving between 11pm and midnight is the sweet spot for most guestlists and tables.

The mistake we see most often is treating the museum bar as dinner. A couple of drinks on an empty stomach, two hours on your feet in a gallery, and the group is flagging by 11pm. Eat properly in the gap and the second half of the night takes care of itself. Our [cinema to club guide](https://londonnightguide.com/cinema-to-club-london/) makes the same point about films: the hour after the main event decides how the night goes.

## Where to go after South Kensington

The Science Museum, the Natural History Museum and the V&A sit together on Exhibition Road in South Kensington, so a late at any of them sets you up for Chelsea or a short taxi into Mayfair.

**The Rex Rooms, Chelsea.** The closest of our clubs to the Kensington museums, at 151 King's Road. As of November 2026 it opens every night except Tuesday, 11pm to 4am, which means it works after a midweek late as well as a Friday one. Tables start from around £1,000 minimum spend. Our [Rex Rooms review](https://londonnightguide.com/rex-rooms-review/) covers the rooms, the music and how the door works.

**Rumour, Mayfair.** Formerly Tabu, at 1 Dover Street by Green Park, open Wednesday to Saturday, 11pm to 4am. It is one room of about 200 built around red velvet booths, with open-format hip hop, RnB and house. Booths start from £1,000 minimum spend, which covers entry for the group, and ladies' guestlist runs from free to £20 on the door depending on the night, as of November 2026. Our [Rumour guide](https://londonnightguide.com/rumour-london/) has the full details, including its strict no-photography policy on the dance floor.

## Where to go after Bankside, Bloomsbury and Trafalgar Square

Tate Modern on Bankside, the British Museum in Bloomsbury and the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square all put you within a short ride of Soho, Mayfair and Fitzrovia.

**Cirque le Soir, Soho.** The most theatrical of our clubs, with performers, circus acts and a crowd that comes dressed for it, which makes it a natural follow-on from an evening of art. As of November 2026 it opens Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and always finishes at 3:45am. Tables start from £800 minimum spend. Entry varies with the night and availability: sometimes complimentary, often around £20, more on special nights. See our [Cirque le Soir guide](https://londonnightguide.com/cirque-le-soir-london/).

**Selene, Fitzrovia.** At 4 Winsley Street, just north of Oxford Circus, a short ride from Bloomsbury. Open Thursday to Sunday, 11pm to 4am, with private bowling lanes that can be booked with a table, a good fit for a group that wants something to do as well as somewhere to dance. Tables start from £800 minimum spend as of November 2026. Our [Selene review](https://londonnightguide.com/selene-london-review/) explains the layout.

**Maya, Soho.** The club beneath Inca London at 8-9 Argyll Street, formerly Luna, open Friday and Saturday, 11pm to 3am. A good choice if your group wants dinner and the club under one roof: eat at Inca, then head downstairs. Table prices are confirmed when you book.

## Where to go after Smithfield

From the London Museum at Smithfield, the Elizabeth line takes you from Farringdon to Tottenham Court Road and Bond Street in minutes.

**99 Regent Street, Mayfair.** The Cuckoo Club founders' new venue, entered on Swallow Street by Piccadilly Circus, open Wednesday to Saturday, 11pm to 4am. Two floors with open-format hip hop and RnB upstairs and house downstairs, both open on Fridays and Saturdays. Entry is 19+ with physical photo ID, the dress code is elegant and enforced, and tables start from £600 minimum spend, covering entry for the group, as of November 2026.

**Tape, Mayfair.** At 17 Hanover Square, a short walk from Bond Street station. Open Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with the main room closing at 3:45am and Little Tape next door running until 5:30am on Fridays and Saturdays. Tables start from £750 minimum spend.

## What to wear when the night has two halves

This is the practical problem with any combo night: the museum is relaxed, the club is not. Most of the clubs above enforce a smart or elegant dress code, and trainers, sportswear and casual jackets are the usual reasons people are turned away.

The simple answer is to dress for the club from the start. Nobody at a museum late will look twice at a smart outfit, and many people dress up for the programmed evenings anyway. Bring comfortable shoes in a bag only if the museum has a cloakroom and you are happy to carry them for the rest of the night; otherwise choose smart shoes you can stand in for two hours. Check the dress code for your chosen club before you leave home, not at the door.

Bring physical photo ID for everyone. Museums rarely ask for it, but every club we book does, and 99 Regent Street will not admit anyone under 19 without it.

## Booking the club half

Museum lates often fall on Fridays and late-month weekdays, which are also popular club nights. If your group is six or more, book the table in advance rather than relying on the door. A table gives you a fixed place to arrive at, entry for the group, and a host who knows you are coming.

Tell us which museum you are starting at and what time the late finishes, and we will suggest the club that fits the route and the night of the week. For a smaller group or a date, a guestlist spot is often enough; for a birthday or a work night out, a table makes the evening far easier to manage.

## Plan your museum late night out

A museum late is a better opening act than most bars: something to see, something to talk about, and a natural finish around 10pm that leaves just enough time for dinner before the club. Pick the late, eat properly in the gap, dress for the second half, and book the club before the weekend fills up. Message us on [WhatsApp](https://wa.me/447348644054) with your museum, your night and your group size, and we will arrange the guestlist or the table.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is a museum late in London?

A museum late is an evening opening, usually for adults, when a museum keeps its galleries open after normal hours and adds a bar, music, talks, DJs or activities. Some are free drop-in evenings and some are ticketed, so check the museum's own listings before you go.

### What time do museum lates finish?

Most museum lates finish around 9:30pm to 10pm. That leaves about an hour for dinner or a drink before the clubs we book open at 11pm, which is why a late makes such a good start to a night out.

### When does the new London Museum at Smithfield open?

The London Museum opens its new Smithfield site, London EC1A 9AG, on Saturday 28 November 2026. General admission is free with a booked ticket. Check the museum's listings for its evening opening hours.

### Which club is closest to the South Kensington museums?

The Rex Rooms at 151 King's Road, Chelsea, is the closest of the clubs we book. As of November 2026 it opens every night except Tuesday, 11pm to 4am, with tables from around £1,000 minimum spend.

### Can I go clubbing in what I wear to a museum late?

Only if you dress for the club from the start. Most of the clubs we book enforce a smart or elegant dress code and turn away trainers and sportswear, so dress for the club and bring physical photo ID.
