A Christmas markets night out in London is one of the easiest festive plans to put together: browse the stalls with a mulled wine in the early evening, move on to dinner, then finish the night in a club. The capital's best seasonal markets open from early November, several of them sit a short walk from the West End clubs we book, and the shape of the night barely changes whether it is a group of friends, a date or a team outing. This guide covers which markets suit a night out in 2026, how to pair each one with a club, how to time the evening and what to wear when the night starts outdoors and ends at a club door.

It is the latest in our "X first, party after" series, alongside the Christmas lights walk and the Winter Wonderland night. A market is a more social opener than a lights walk, because there is something to eat, drink and talk about at every stall, but it brings its own planning problems, so read the timing section before you pick a meeting point.

## Which Christmas Markets Suit a Night Out in 2026

Not every market works as the start of a big night. The ones that do are central, open into the evening and close to a dinner area and a club. According to [Time Out's guide to the best Christmas markets in London for 2026](https://www.timeout.com/london/shopping/christmas-markets-and-fairs-in-london), these are the dates for the markets most useful for a night out (as of October 2026):

| Market | Area | Dates (2026) | Best club route after |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Southbank Centre Winter Market | South Bank, by the Thames | 2 November to 3 January 2027 | over the river to Covent Garden, Soho or Trafalgar Square |
| Covent Garden Christmas | the Piazza and Market Building | from 12 November | a short walk into Soho |
| Hyde Park Winter Wonderland market | Hyde Park | 19 November to 3 January 2027 | Mayfair and Piccadilly |
| Old Spitalfields Market | Spitalfields, East London | 12 November to 24 December | a taxi or Tube ride west |
| Christmas at Leadenhall Market | City of London | craft markets on 14 November and 12 December | a taxi or Tube ride west |
| Christmas at Borough Market | Borough, south of London Bridge | 1 to 31 December | a taxi or Tube ride west |

The Southbank Centre Winter Market is the strongest all-rounder for groups. Time Out describes Alpine-style wooden cabins along the river selling gifts, mulled wine, truffle burgers, duck wraps, churros and Dutch pancakes, plus a riverside raclette pop-up with fire pits. It runs for the whole season and is a walk across Waterloo Bridge or the Golden Jubilee footbridges from the West End.

Covent Garden is the most festive setting and the closest to the clubs. Time Out lists stalls selling handmade crafts and artisan gifts beneath the Market Building's giant bells, baubles and mirror balls, with mulled wine stations as the season goes on. Old Spitalfields runs Christmas Shopping Lates with browsing until 8pm and a pop-up bar, and Borough Market's December programme of tastings and masterclasses suits a food-first group, although Time Out says more details are still to come.

## Why a Market Works as the Start of a Night

A market does three things well. It gives a group a reason to meet early, it gets everyone eating and drinking together, and it is free to walk in, so nobody has to commit money before they arrive. Mulled wine and street food also mean the group is not going out on an empty stomach, which is the most common way a big December night goes wrong.

It also has three weaknesses, and a good plan designs around all of them.

- **It is outdoors and it is cold.** An hour standing between stalls in December leaves people chilly, and nobody wants to queue outside a club afterwards still frozen. Plan a warm, sit-down stop straight after the market.
- **It is busy at weekends.** Covent Garden and the Southbank are packed on December Saturdays, which makes it hard to keep a group together. Agree one meeting point, such as a named stall or a landmark, and one time.
- **It closes long before the club opens.** Most markets wind down in the early evening, and the clubs we book open from 10pm or 11pm. That gap is the real planning job, and it is where dinner and a bar come in.

## Pairing Each Market With a Club

The simplest rule is to choose a market on the same side of town as the club, so the night moves in one direction. Opening nights, hours and minimum spends below are from our venue listings as of October 2026.

**Covent Garden or the Southbank, then Soho:**

- **Cirque le Soir** is the most theatrical option, with performers working the room through the night. It opens on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, always finishes at 3:45am, and tables start from £800 minimum spend. Entry is 18+, rising to 21+ at weekends. Our [Cirque le Soir guide](https://londonnightguide.com/cirque-le-soir-london/) has the full picture.
- **The Box** is the late-night cabaret choice for a group that wants a show rather than a dancefloor. It opens Wednesday to Saturday from 11pm to 4am, has no guestlist and tables start from £1,000. See our [guide to The Box](https://londonnightguide.com/the-box-london/).
- **TSQ Club**, beneath Thai Square at Trafalgar Square, is the shortest hop from the Southbank: cross the Golden Jubilee footbridges and you are almost there. It opens on Fridays and Saturdays from 10pm to 3am, last entry 2am, with entry paid on the door and tables from £1,000.

**Winter Wonderland, then Mayfair and Piccadilly:**

- **Rumour**, formerly Tabu, is at 1 Dover Street near Green Park, a short taxi ride from Hyde Park Corner. It opens Wednesday to Saturday from 11pm to 4am, with booths from £1,000. Our [Rumour guide](https://londonnightguide.com/rumour-london/) covers the door and the booths.
- **Reign** is at 215 to 217 Piccadilly, opens on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday until 4am, and has tables from £800.
- **99 Regent Street**, formerly Cuckoo Club, has its entrance on Swallow Street off the lower end of Regent Street. It opens Wednesday to Saturday from 11pm to 4am, with tables from £600 and entry at 19+ with physical photo ID.

**Spitalfields, Leadenhall or Borough, then the West End:**

These markets are usually a 15 to 25 minute ride from the West End, so build the journey into the plan. **Tape** on Hanover Square, near Oxford Circus, is a good target: it opens on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the main room closes at 3:45am, Little Tape next door carries on until 5:30am on Fridays and Saturdays, and tables start from £750. Have dinner close to the club rather than close to the market, so the long hop happens while everyone is still fresh.

## How to Time a Markets Night Out

Because the market is free and flexible, the club and the dinner booking set the timetable. Work backwards from the club, not forwards from the market.

1. **Pick the club night first.** Each club opens on set nights, and December weekend tables go weeks ahead. There is no point planning a Saturday at the Southbank if the club you want is already full.
2. **Arrive at the market after dark.** It is dark well before 5pm in November and December, which is when the lights and the stalls look their best. A 5.30pm or 6pm meet suits most groups.
3. **Give the market an hour, not a whole evening.** One lap, one mulled wine and something to eat is enough. Stay longer and the cold and the crowds start to take over.
4. **Book dinner for straight after.** A table at 7.30pm or 8pm in Covent Garden, Soho or Mayfair warms everyone up and breaks the long gap before the club.
5. **Add one bar, then the club.** Dinner will finish by about 9.30pm, still early for a club. One drink somewhere lively keeps the momentum, then aim to arrive at the club between 10.30pm and 11.30pm, when most West End rooms start to fill.

A sample Friday: meet at the Southbank Centre Winter Market at 6pm, cross the river to Covent Garden for a look at the Piazza by 7pm, dinner at 7.45pm, a drink in Soho at 9.45pm, then Cirque le Soir for 11pm.

## What to Wear When the Night Ends at a Club Door

Plan the outfit around the club, not the market. A West End club wants smart clothes and, at most doors, no sportswear; the market wants warmth.

- **Dress for the club, layer for the market.** Smart trousers or a dress, with a proper winter coat, scarf and gloves over the top. Hand the coat in at the club cloakroom.
- **Pick shoes that cope with cobbles and wet ground.** Covent Garden and Leadenhall both have uneven paving, and market ground is often wet in December. Smart shoes with some grip beat heels you will regret by the second stall.
- **Do the shopping on another day.** Big bags of gifts are awkward in a crowd and unwelcome at most club doors. If you must buy something, keep it small enough for a coat pocket.

## Groups, Dates and Christmas Work Parties

- **Big groups:** a market is the friendliest way to gather a large group before a club, because people can arrive in ones and twos without anyone waiting outside a restaurant. Book one long dinner table and book the club table in advance, as large groups are far easier to get in with a table than on the door.
- **Dates:** a market lap with a hot drink is a low-pressure start that gives a couple something to talk about. Keep dinner close by and choose a club with seating, such as The Box.
- **Christmas work parties:** a market meet is a good shared start that does not depend on everyone drinking, and colleagues who are not staying out can leave after dinner. If the evening then moves to a club table or a private area, our [Christmas party planner](https://londonnightguide.com/christmas-party-planner/) covers tables, hire and costs for December.

If your group wants a different festive opener, our [Christmas lights night out guide](https://londonnightguide.com/christmas-lights-night-out-london/) and [Winter Wonderland night out guide](https://londonnightguide.com/winter-wonderland-night-out-london/) use the same format.

## Mistakes That Spoil a Markets Night

- **Drinking too much mulled wine too early.** It is warm, sweet and easy to drink quickly. Two cups before dinner is plenty if the night is meant to last until 3am.
- **Choosing a market on the wrong side of town.** A Borough or Spitalfields start followed by a Mayfair club adds a long journey at the point everyone is tired. Match the market to the club.
- **Leaving the club until last.** Markets need no booking, so groups often plan them first and the club last. In December that order is backwards.
- **Ignoring midweek.** December Saturdays are the busiest at markets and clubs alike. A Wednesday or Thursday is calmer on both counts.

## Plan Your Markets and Party Night

A Christmas markets night out works best when the market sits on the same side of town as the club, the group eats properly before the long gap is over and the club table is booked before anything else. Pick the club night first, give the market an hour after dark, warm up over dinner and dress for the door rather than the stalls. If you would like help with the club half of the night, from a table at Cirque le Soir after Covent Garden to a booth at Rumour after Winter Wonderland, message our team on [WhatsApp](https://wa.me/447348644054) with your date and group size, and we will suggest what fits.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### When do the Christmas markets open in London in 2026?

According to Time Out (as of October 2026), the Southbank Centre Winter Market opens on 2 November and runs to 3 January 2027, Covent Garden's Christmas market from 12 November, Old Spitalfields from 12 November to 24 December, Hyde Park Winter Wonderland from 19 November to 3 January 2027, and Borough Market's Christmas programme from 1 to 31 December.

### Which London Christmas market is best before a night out?

Covent Garden and the Southbank Centre Winter Market are the best for a night out, because both are a short walk from Soho and Trafalgar Square, where clubs such as Cirque le Soir, The Box and TSQ Club are. For Mayfair and Piccadilly clubs, Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is the closest.

### How long should we spend at the market before dinner?

About an hour is right for most groups: one lap, a hot drink and something to eat. Arrive after dark, around 5.30pm or 6pm, and book dinner for 7.30pm or 8pm so nobody gets too cold before the club.

### Can we go clubbing in London in what we wore to a Christmas market?

Yes, if you dress for the club and layer for the market. Wear smart clothes with a warm coat, scarf and gloves on top, choose smart shoes with some grip, and hand the coat in at the club cloakroom. Most West End clubs refuse sportswear.

### Can you book a club table for after a Christmas market?

Yes. Pick the club night first, because December weekend tables go weeks ahead, then plan the market and dinner around it. Message our team on WhatsApp with your date and group size and we will suggest a club that fits your market.
