A Christmas lights night out in London is the simplest festive plan there is: walk under the West End's illuminations in the early evening, have dinner nearby, then finish the night in a club. The big displays on Regent Street, Oxford Street, Carnaby and Covent Garden all sit within a short walk of each other, and several of the clubs we book are only a few minutes beyond them. This guide covers when the lights go on for 2026, which route to walk, how to time dinner and where to go once the walk is done.

It follows the same format as the rest of our "X first, party after" series: a fixed early-evening activity that gives the night a shape, a warm bridge for food and drinks, and then a club. The lights are the easiest opener of the lot because they are free and need no booking, but that freedom brings its own planning problems, so read the timing section before you set a meeting point.

## When the Christmas Lights Go On in 2026

Most of London's festive displays are switched on in early November and stay lit until the first days of January. According to [Time Out's guide to the best Christmas lights in London](https://www.timeout.com/london/things-to-do/christmas-lights-in-london), these are the dates for the central displays this season (as of October 2026):

| Display | Area | Switch-on (2026) | Lit until | Listed hours |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Oxford Street | Oxford Circus to Marble Arch | early November | early January | 4pm to midnight |
| Carnaby | Soho, off Regent Street | Wednesday 4 November | early January | not listed |
| Regent Street | Oxford Circus to Piccadilly Circus | Thursday 5 November | 5 January 2027 | 3pm to 11pm |
| Covent Garden | the Piazza and Market Building | Thursday 12 November | 1 January 2027 | not listed |
| Christmas at Kew | Kew Gardens (ticketed trail) | Friday 13 November | 3 January 2027 | timed entry |

Regent Street's angels are the classic: Time Out notes the street was the first in London to put up Christmas lights, in 1954, and the current display is a run of 45 trumpet-playing angels. Oxford Street is the biggest, with more than 300,000 individual lights. Covent Garden brings back its 55ft tree with 30,000 lights, plus giant bells and baubles on the Market Building roof, under a "Theatre of Christmas" theme.

Two things follow from those dates. First, the lights are already on for every Friday and Saturday from early November, which means a lights night is a good way to get ahead of the December rush, when restaurants and club tables are hardest to book. Second, the switch-on evenings themselves are busy, so if your group just wants a relaxed walk, pick a different night.

## Why the Lights Work as the Start of a Night

The lights do one thing very well: they get people in the mood without asking anything of them. There is no ticket to buy, no slot to miss and no skill involved, so even the least festive member of the group can come along. They also look good in photos, which matters if the night is a birthday, a work outing or a date.

They have three weaknesses, and a good plan designs around all of them.

- **It is a walk, not an event.** Nothing happens at a set time, so groups drift. Agree one meeting point and one start time, and walk the route together rather than meeting in pieces.
- **It is cold and it is crowded.** Oxford Street and Regent Street in December are full of shoppers until late, and an hour outside in winter leaves people chilly. Plan a warm sit-down stop straight after the walk, not a queue outside a club.
- **It finishes early.** A lights walk takes 45 minutes to an hour. Start at 6pm and you are done by 7pm, which leaves a long gap before any club fills. That gap is the real planning job.

## The Best Route for a Lights Night Out

For a lights-then-club night, the best route starts north and finishes south, so that dinner and the clubs are at the end of the walk rather than behind you.

1. **Start at Oxford Circus.** Walk a short stretch of Oxford Street to see the main display, then come back to the junction. There is no need to walk the full length to Marble Arch: it is a long street, and you will spend most of it dodging shoppers.
2. **Head down Regent Street.** This is the heart of the walk: the angels run the length of the curve towards Piccadilly Circus, and the wide pavements make it the most comfortable stretch for a group.
3. **Detour into Carnaby.** Cut east from Regent Street into Carnaby Street for its themed display, which changes every year, then rejoin Regent Street lower down.
4. **Finish at Covent Garden.** From Piccadilly Circus it is a short walk through Leicester Square to the Piazza, its tree and the Market Building. Covent Garden is also the obvious place to stop for dinner.

The whole route is roughly an hour at a group's pace with photo stops. If the group wants something more structured and does not mind travelling, Christmas at Kew is a ticketed light trail rather than a street walk; Time Out says this year includes adults-only evenings for the first time. It is a long way from the West End clubs, though, so treat it as a whole evening rather than a warm-up.

## How to Time the Night

Because the walk is free and flexible, the club and the dinner booking set the timetable. Work backwards from the club, not forwards from the lights.

1. **Pick the club night first.** Clubs open on set nights (see below), and the best weekend tables in December go weeks ahead. There is no point planning a Saturday walk if the club you want is already full.
2. **Start the walk after dark and after work.** It is dark well before 5pm in November and December, so a 6pm or 6.30pm start at Oxford Circus gives the full effect without needing an early finish at work.
3. **Book dinner for straight after the walk.** Everyone will be cold. A table at around 7.30pm in Covent Garden or Soho is the natural landing point for the route above.
4. **Add a bar between dinner and the club.** Dinner will finish by about 9.30pm, still early for a club. One drink somewhere lively keeps the momentum going.
5. **Aim to reach the club between 10.30pm and 11.30pm.** That is when most West End clubs start to fill. Arriving before 10pm usually means an empty room; arriving after midnight on a December Saturday can mean a long wait at the door.

A sample Friday: meet at Oxford Circus at 6.30pm, walk Regent Street and Carnaby, reach Covent Garden by 7.30pm for dinner, a drink in Soho at 9.30pm, then into the club for 11pm. ## Where to Go After the Lights

These are the clubs we book that sit closest to the lights route. Opening nights and hours are from our venue listings as of October 2026; always check the night you want before booking anything else.

**Off Regent Street and Oxford Circus:**

- **99 Regent Street**, formerly Cuckoo Club, is right on the route: the entrance is on Swallow Street, just off the lower end of Regent Street. It opens Wednesday to Saturday. See our [99 Regent Street guide](https://londonnightguide.com/99-regent-street-london/) for tables and the door.
- **Tape** is on Hanover Square, a few minutes from Oxford Circus. It opens on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and the main room closes at 3:45am, with Little Tape next door carrying on until 5:30am on Fridays and Saturdays. Tables start from around £1,000 midweek and £1,500 to £2,000 on Fridays and Saturdays (as of October 2026). Our [Tape London guide](https://londonnightguide.com/tape-club-london/) has the full picture.
- **Selene** is at 4 Winsley Street in Fitzrovia, just north of Oxford Circus, so it suits a walk that starts on Oxford Street. It opens Thursday to Sunday from 11pm to 4am, and it has private bowling lanes that can be booked with a table. Read our [Selene review](https://londonnightguide.com/selene-london-review/) before you go.

**Near Carnaby, Soho and Covent Garden:**

- **Cirque le Soir** in Soho is the most theatrical option, with performers working the room through the night. It opens on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday and finishes at 3:45am.
- **The Box** in Soho is the late-night cabaret choice for a group that wants a show rather than a dancefloor. It opens Wednesday to Saturday.
- **TSQ Club**, beneath Thai Square at Trafalgar Square, is a short walk from Covent Garden. It opens on Fridays and Saturdays from 10pm to 3am, with last entry at 2am. Entry is paid on the door rather than a free guestlist, and tables start from £1,000 minimum spend (as of October 2026). See our [TSQ Club guestlist page](https://londonnightguide.com/tsq-club-guestlist/) for the door details.

## What to Wear for a Walk That Ends at a Club Door

Plan the outfit around the club, not the walk. A West End club wants smart clothes and, at most doors, no sportswear; the walk wants warmth.

- **Dress for the club, layer for the street.** Smart trousers or a dress with a proper winter coat, scarf and gloves. Hand the coat in at the club cloakroom.
- **Wear shoes you can walk an hour in.** The route is about a mile and a half of pavement. Smart shoes with some comfort beat heels you will regret by Piccadilly Circus.
- **Keep bags small.** Leave the shopping for another day: big bags are awkward in a crowd and unwelcome at most club doors.

## Making It Work for Groups, Dates and Work Parties

- **Big groups:** set one meeting point, walk together and book one long dinner table. Large groups are far easier to get into a club with a table booked in advance than on the door.
- **Dates:** the lights make an easy, low-pressure start to a date night. Our [date night out guide](https://londonnightguide.com/date-night-out-london/) covers the dinner and bar steps.
- **Christmas work parties:** a walk under the lights is a good shared start that does not depend on everyone drinking. If the evening then moves to a club table or a private area, our [Christmas party planner](https://londonnightguide.com/christmas-party-planner/) covers tables, hire and costs for December.

If your group wants a different festive opener, our [ice skating night out guide](https://londonnightguide.com/ice-skating-night-out-london/) and [Winter Wonderland night out guide](https://londonnightguide.com/winter-wonderland-night-out-london/) use the same format.

## Plan Your Lights and Party Night

A Christmas lights night out works best when the route runs towards dinner and the clubs, the walk starts after dark and the gap between the lights and the club is filled on purpose with a warm meal and a good bar. Pick the club night first, plan the walk around it and dress for the door rather than the pavement. If you would like help with the club half of the night, from a table at 99 Regent Street or Tape to a Friday at TSQ Club, message our team on [WhatsApp](https://wa.me/447348644054) with your date and group size, and we will suggest what fits.
